In this article, the all-things-cannabis experts at Honest Marijuana give you the rundown on how to make CBD gummies in your very own kitchen.
First, though, we’ll start by discussing the components of these tasty treats: CBD and gummies.
What Is CBD?
CBD (short for cannabidiol) is one of a group of chemical compounds called cannabinoids.
THC (short for tetrahydrocannabinol) is probably the best-known cannabinoid, but CBD is rapidly growing in popularity and notoriety.
Other cannabinoids include:
And that’s just for starters. Scientists have isolated 113 different cannabinoids so far. Who knew the cannabis plant held such a plethora of chemicals, right? But back to the topic at hand.
Once it enters your bloodstream, CBD interacts with neurons (or receptors) in your brain — and in your body itself — to produce a variety of beneficial effects that make it very useful in treating some very difficult medical issues.
It’s also why you’ll find it in one of our favorite treats: gummies.
What Are Gummies?
The first gummy candies — which, incidentally, were shaped like bears — were invented in Germany in the late 1920s. Back then, they were basically just sugar and fruit flavoring.
In the 1990s, though, two natural-food advocates thought to include healthy vitamins in their gummies as a way to get kids to take a daily multi.
That was the inspiration for adding all kinds of extra ingredients into the mix.
Now, you can get gummies in a wide variety of flavors, shapes, and sizes and with a wide variety of additives…including, of course, CBD gummies.
What Are CBD Gummies?
As the name suggests, CBD gummies are chewy, often fruit-flavored candies that contain a small dose of the cannabinoid CBD.
Creative manufacturers form their CBD gummies into bears, fish, fruit shapes, and anything else that comes to mind.
But, honestly, CBD gummies can just be a small square or sphere (or any other simple shape, for that matter) if you don’t have access to fancy molds.
As long as they contain the right amount of CBD — and taste good going down — most people don’t care what the gummies are shaped like.
That brings us to the main topic of this article: how to make CBD gummies at home.

Will CBD Gummies Get You High?
When it comes to CBD gummies — or any CBD product, for that matter — this is what everyone wants to know. The simple answer is no, CBD gummies won’t get you high.
They won’t get you high because they don’t contain the cannabinoid THC — the chemical compound that causes the psychedelic effects that make marijuana so famous (or infamous, depending on how you look at it).
CBD gummies are typically made from high-CBD, low-THC strains, so there’s no reason to worry that you’ll suddenly start feeling words or laughing at Adam Sandler movies.
If you do, there was more than CBD in those gummies you popped.
Side Effects Of CBD Gummies
1) Dry Mouth
One of the most common side effects of the CBD in CBD gummies is dry mouth.
But in a world full of medications with side effects that are worse than the original problem, a bit of dry mouth doesn’t seem all that bad, does it?
2) Possible Interference With Other Medications
CBD interferes with your liver’s ability to process other drugs.
So if you take a heart medication and add CBD to control your blood sugar, the CBD could negate the benefits of the heart medicine and cause more harm than good.
Be sure to talk to a physician about whether adding a CBD gummy to your diet is right for your condition.
3) Biphasic Characteristics
Biphasic means that at low levels CBD will provide certain effects, while at high levels it will provide different effects.
If this seems foreign to you, think about alcohol which is also biphasic. At low levels, it’s a stimulant, while, at high levels, it’s a depressant.
CBD doesn’t act exactly the same as alcohol — stimulant on one end, depressant on the other — but the effects will change as the dosage level increases.
Most people don’t have to worry about the biphasic characteristics of the CBD in their gummies because they won’t take enough of the fruity treats at any one time to reach the level where the effects change.
That said, it’s still good to know exactly what CBD can do and that those effects exist so you can get the experience you’re looking for from your CBD gummies.
How To Make CBD Gummies: The Right Strain
A big part of learning how to make CBD gummies is picking the right strain to add to the mix.
Even if you’ve never tried CBD products before, you know you’re going to feel a bit different after popping your first gummy — that’s the whole point, after all.
But knowing how different you’re going to feel is an important part of having a good experience. And the only way to predict the results is to get familiar with the strains available to you.
That’s why it’s so important to try a variety of strains, including:
While you’re doing your research and learning everything you can about the wide world of weed, here are some suggestions for high-CBD strains to get you started.
- Charlotte’s Web
- Ringo’s Gift
- Sour Tsunami
Once you understand the effects of a certain strain, you’ll be better able to make a better decision about whether or not you want to include it in your CBD gummy recipe.
